Biodigester Problems in Ghana:
8 Signs Yours Needs Servicing

Why biodigesters smell, block and overflow β€” and how to fix them

πŸ“… October 2026 ✍️ BD Septic Services πŸ“ Accra, Ghana ⏱️ 7 min read

Biodigesters have become the go-to toilet system for new homes in Accra and across Ghana. Many people call them "bio-digesters" or "Biofil toilets" after one well-known brand. They are compact, they use bacteria to break down waste, and they rarely need a toilet puller. So when a biodigester starts smelling, blocking or overflowing, many homeowners are caught by surprise. Wasn't it supposed to be maintenance-free?

The short answer: no biodigester is maintenance-free. In this guide, the BD Septic Services team explains the most common biodigester problems we see in Accra homes, the warning signs to look out for, what causes them, and how to fix them before they become expensive.

Why Do Biodigesters Still Need Servicing?

A biodigester is a sealed underground chamber where bacteria digest toilet waste. The treated liquid flows out to a soak-away. Because the bacteria break down most of the organic matter, a biodigester fills up far more slowly than a traditional septic tank.

But "slowly" is not "never". Every biodigester collects material that bacteria cannot fully digest:

  • Sludge β€” the dense, partly digested layer that settles at the bottom
  • Silt and sand β€” washed in from floor drains, bathroom floors and cleaning water
  • Tissue, wipes and sanitary products β€” which break down slowly or not at all

Because a biodigester is a small chamber, this build-up takes up a big share of its space. Once the chamber is crowded with sludge and silt, waste no longer has room or time to digest, and solids start escaping into the pipes and soak-away. That is when the problems begin. In our experience across Accra, most household biodigesters need cleaning at least every 1–2 years.

8 Signs Your Biodigester Needs Servicing

  1. Slow or weak flushing. Toilets take long to empty or need two or three flushes. This is usually the first sign the chamber or outlet pipe is filling up.
  2. Blocked or clogged pipes. Waste stops moving between the toilet, the biodigester and the soak-away. You may see water rising in the toilet bowl.
  3. Water backing up in showers and floor drains. When the system is full, water looks for the lowest exit point β€” often your bathroom floor drain.
  4. Bad smells. A healthy biodigester has little or no odour. A strong smell around the manhole, bathroom or compound means digestion has slowed down or the system is overloaded.
  5. Gurgling pipes. Bubbling or gurgling sounds when you flush or drain water point to trapped air from a partial blockage.
  6. Overflowing manhole or soak-away. Wastewater pooling around the biodigester cover, especially after heavy rain, is a clear sign it needs attention urgently.
  7. Wet, soggy ground or very green grass near the soak-away, showing it can no longer absorb the effluent properly.
  8. No service in the last 1–2 years. Even with no symptoms yet, a biodigester that hasn't been cleaned in this time is almost certainly carrying a heavy layer of sludge and silt.

If you notice two or more of these signs, don't wait for an overflow. Book a biodigester servicing visit.

What Causes Biodigester Problems?

1. Sludge and silt build-up

This is the number one cause we find in Accra homes. Over months and years, sludge and silt fill the chamber until there is no working space left for digestion.

2. Bleach and harsh chemicals killing the bacteria

Your biodigester depends on living bacteria. Large amounts of bleach, strong toilet cleaners, disinfectants and acids poured down the toilet kill them. Without bacteria, waste simply piles up and starts to smell.

3. Things that should never be flushed

Wet wipes, sanitary pads, diapers, condoms, plastic, rags and cooking oil do not digest. They cause blockages in the pipes and the chamber.

4. Too many users for the size

A biodigester built for a family of five will struggle in a home where ten people now live, or in a compound house with several tenants. Overloaded systems fill faster and need more frequent servicing.

5. Rainwater and floor-drain water entering the system

When gutters or compound drains are connected to the biodigester, heavy rain floods it and washes sand and silt in. This is a very common cause of overflows during the rainy season.

6. Damaged pipes, covers or soak-away

Cracked pipes, broken manhole covers and a failed soak-away can all look like a "full" biodigester. These need repair, not just cleaning.

How Biodigester Servicing Fixes the Problem

At BD Septic Services, a standard biodigester service in Accra follows four steps:

  1. Inspection β€” we open the manhole and check sludge levels, inlet and outlet pipes, and the soak-away.
  2. Cleaning and desludging β€” our suction truck removes the built-up sludge and silt, and we clear blocked pipes and drains.
  3. Enzyme and bacteria treatment β€” after every clean we add enzyme and bacteria treatment to restart digestion, so the system works properly again straight away.
  4. Advice and repairs β€” we tell you about any damage we find and recommend when your next service is due.

If your biodigester is cracked, undersized or beyond repair, we also build new biodigesters for homes, estates and commercial buildings. See our biodigester services in Accra.

How to Prevent Biodigester Problems

  • βœ… Service it every 1–2 years β€” write down the date of your last service
  • βœ… Use mild, septic-safe cleaners and avoid pouring bleach directly into the toilet
  • βœ… Flush only toilet paper and human waste β€” put a bin with a lid in every bathroom
  • βœ… Keep rainwater out β€” gutters and compound drains should not run into the biodigester
  • βœ… Keep the manhole accessible β€” don't tile or build over it
  • βœ… Plan for more users β€” if more people move in, service more often or ask us about expanding capacity

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a biodigester be emptied in Ghana?

For most homes, a biodigester should be cleaned and desludged at least every 1–2 years. Larger households, compound houses and homes where rainwater or sand enters the system may need servicing more often.

Why does my biodigester smell?

A smelly biodigester usually means the chamber is full of sludge and silt, or the bacteria have been killed by bleach and harsh chemicals. Cleaning the biodigester and adding a fresh enzyme and bacteria treatment normally solves the problem.

Can a biodigester get blocked?

Yes. Biodigesters get blocked when sludge and silt build up, or when wipes, sanitary pads, plastic or oil are flushed. Blockages show up as slow flushing, water backing up in drains and gurgling pipes.

Do biodigesters need a toilet puller?

Not as often as a septic tank, but yes. A suction truck is used to remove the sludge and silt that bacteria cannot digest. BD Septic Services cleans biodigesters with suction trucks and then adds bacteria treatment.

Is a Biofil toilet the same as a biodigester?

Biofil is the name of one well-known brand of biodigester toilet in Ghana, and many people use the name for all biodigesters. They work on the same principle and all need regular cleaning.

How much does biodigester servicing cost in Accra?

The cost depends on the size of your biodigester, how full it is, access to the manhole and your location in Greater Accra. Call BD Septic Services on 0244 203 037 for a free quote before we come.
