If you are building a house in Accra today, one of the first questions your mason or engineer will ask is: biodigester or septic tank? Both are common in Ghana, both handle toilet waste on your own property, and both need maintenance β but they work very differently.
At BD Septic Services we clean, repair and build both systems across Greater Accra. Here is our honest, practical comparison to help you choose β and to help you look after the system you already have.

How Does a Biodigester Work?
A biodigester (also written bio-digester, and often called a Biofil toilet in Ghana after a popular brand) is a compact, sealed chamber where bacteria break down toilet waste. The waste is digested in the chamber, and the treated liquid flows out into a soak-away or drain.
Because the bacteria do most of the work, the solids reduce a lot, so a biodigester needs emptying much less often than a septic tank. But sludge, silt and anything the bacteria cannot digest still collect over time, so it still needs cleaning, typically every 1β2 years.
How Does a Septic Tank Work?
A septic tank is a larger underground tank, usually built of concrete blocks. Waste flows in, heavy solids sink as sludge, light materials float as scum, and the liquid in between flows out to a soak-away. Some natural digestion happens, but much less than in a biodigester, so the sludge builds up and must be removed by a toilet puller, typically every 3β5 years for a family home.
A related system, the cesspit, has no outlet at all β it simply holds everything until it is emptied, so it fills much faster. Read more in our septic tank guide for Ghana.
Biodigester vs Septic Tank: Side-by-Side
| Feature | Biodigester | Septic Tank |
|---|---|---|
| Size / space needed | Compact β fits small plots and tight compounds | Larger β needs more space and digging |
| How waste is treated | Bacteria actively digest most of the waste | Mainly settling; limited natural digestion |
| How often it needs cleaning | About every 1β2 years | About every 3β5 years for a family home |
| Volume removed per service | Smaller β mostly sludge and silt | Larger β a full tank of sludge and liquid |
| Sensitivity to chemicals | High β bleach and harsh cleaners kill the bacteria | Moderate |
| Effect of rain and sand | Small chamber fills quickly if rainwater or silt gets in | More room to absorb occasional extra water |
| Best suited to | New homes, small plots, modest numbers of users | Larger plots, big households, compound houses, high-use buildings |
| Needs a soak-away? | Yes, in most designs | Yes (a cesspit does not, but fills much faster) |
Which Is Better for Your Property?
There is no single winner β it depends on your plot, your household and how carefully the system will be used.
A biodigester is usually a good choice if:
- You have a small plot or little space for a large tank
- It is a single family home with a predictable number of users
- You can keep bleach, wipes and sanitary products out of the toilet
- You are happy to service it every 1β2 years
A septic tank may be the better choice if:
- It serves a compound house, school, church, hotel or office with many users
- The number of users changes a lot (tenants, events, guests)
- Users are likely to flush things that bacteria can't digest
- You have enough space and want longer gaps between services

Maintenance: What Each System Needs
Biodigester maintenance
- Cleaning and desludging every 1β2 years
- Enzyme and bacteria treatment after each clean to restart digestion
- Keeping rainwater and sand out of the system
- Using mild cleaners instead of bleach in the toilet
Learn the warning signs in our article: 8 Signs Your Biodigester Needs Servicing.
Septic tank maintenance
- Pumping and desludging every 3β5 years for a family home (more often for heavy use)
- Checking the inlet, outlet and soak-away
- Not flushing oil, wipes, plastic or sanitary products

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a biodigester better than a septic tank?
A biodigester is often better for small plots and single family homes because it is compact and needs emptying less often. A septic tank is often better for compound houses and buildings with many users. Both need regular servicing.
Does a biodigester need to be emptied?
Yes. Bacteria digest most of the waste, but sludge, silt and non-digestible items still build up. Most household biodigesters need cleaning at least every 1β2 years.
How long does a biodigester last in Ghana?
A well-built biodigester that is serviced regularly and protected from bleach, rainwater and non-flushable items can serve a home for many years. Neglect is the main reason biodigesters fail early.
Can I convert my septic tank to a biodigester?
Yes. BD Septic Services converts septic tanks to biodigesters across Greater Accra. We inspect your tank, pipes and soak-away first, then carry out the conversion that suits your property.
Can bleach damage a biodigester?
Yes. Bleach and strong disinfectants kill the bacteria that digest the waste. Use mild cleaners and avoid pouring bleach directly into the toilet.
